- YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION:
You should know that everything Facebook knows about you is used for advertising. While Facebook is free and will always be for you, it’s understandable that it has to get money from someone else and like every successful website it invites advertisers to pay for promotion of their services. Every once in a while however, you may have happened to be surprised at how thoughtful Facebook is and how well it knows you.
Did it offer you a remedy for thin hair? “Wow!! That’s what you I’ve been looking for”… You might say to yourself. Well, let me say this, Facebook is not psychic. You provided it all that information in your preferences, reason why Facebook also offers you related products and services based on your own choices and online activity. Anything you Google search appears on your Facebook suggestions too.
So if you are tired of endless ads and find them annoying you can put a stop to these by editing your preferences. To do this go to (www.facebook.com/ads/preferences/edit).
- DISABLE FACIAL RECOGNITION:
About 350 million photos are uploaded to Facebook every day, meaning 4000 photos appear on different users’ pages and newsfeeds every second. Truth remains that many of such photos are of great value and users would want to keep them forever.
For example, photos of your kid sister’s first day at work or your best friend’s wedding. Some pictures however should rather be taken off. Remember that Friday night you were having drinks with your pals, you decided to take some “drunk selfies” and later on your friend decides to post those pictures on Facebook, tags you in them and you forgot to remove the tags?
You may probably not remember, but not Facebook, as it recognizes you and your prospective employer can come across the photos too. How embarrassing that can be. If you don’t want that to happen, you could easily edit your “Who Sees Tag Suggestions” in the Timeline and Tagging settings of your Facebook account as seen inh the photo above.
- YOUR LOCATION ON PHOTO TAGS:
While some people find the Facebook “Nearby Friends” function handy, others are not so excited about being easily tracked. The same is true for tags on photos. Tagging your location when you’re at home means everyone will be able to see where you live. Pictures with geo tags from bars give away your party locations where you might not want to see your ex or obsessive stalker for example. That said; if you don’t want to give away your location, don’t share it on photo tags.
