Cameroonian artist Abz Ngitolang turns personal loss into music with his touching song “Paradise”, dedicated to his late parents and fellow Cameroonian artist Gee Reign. Gee Reign’s sudden death shocked many in the Cameroonian music industry. The young artist had a promising career ahead of him and was well-liked by many who knew and followed his work.
“I pray and hope this song speaks to your inner person in a positive and enriching way” Abz Ngitolang
With Paradise, Abz Ngitolang uses music to express the pain of losing people close to him while honoring their memory. The music video was directed by LEGACi Animations, while the song was produced by Abztrumental of Legaci Company.
Abz isn’t the only Cameroonian artist who has turned grief into music. Singer Wazih also drew from the loss of his father for his song “I Will Find You,” using the experience as inspiration while presenting the song as the story of losing someone he loved. Both songs show how artists can use music to process some of life’s most difficult moments while creating something others dealing with loss can connect with.
According to Abz, this is how “Paradise” came about:
“Life is cruel. I waited for days to confirm the news about my fellow brother in showbiz by name #GeeReign. At first I thought it could be a hype, but apparently, nobody seems to come up to say it was all hyping. I really hoped this was not true. Just a week before death took away the gentle soul of a brother, I was spiritually led to record this song #PARADISE.”
“Dedicating it to my late parents and everyone who has lost a loved one, be it a sister, brother, child, father, mother, etc. I could never have imagined I’d be losing a brother in the music industry to the cold hands of death. To me, this is a message to everyone out here, especially my fellow Cameroon artists. Life is short, make sense out of it while there is still time. After the struggle for fame, money, etc., when death surprises you, WHAT NEXT??? #Daddy, #Maa, #GeeReign, I pray you Rest In Peace till we meet in #PARADISE.”
Abz’s words give Paradise even more meaning. Behind the song is the very real experience of losing people he loved and the reminder that life can change without warning For anyone who has experienced the loss of a parent, family member, friend or someone close to them, the message behind Paradise may feel especially familiar.
