Comedian Leslie Jones, who stars in the new Ghostbusters movie, has become the latest victim in Twitter’s struggle to control abusive speech on its platform. She announced she was leaving the social media platform following racist abuse she has been getting from fans.
In a series of tweets, she went on a twitter rant expressing her disappointment at individuals who encourage Racism and Hate comments on social media, before finally leaving.
“I’m not stupid to not know racism exists. And I know it will probably livenon way after me. But we have to make people take responsibility” she shared adding, “I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s*** I got today… wrong,“
#LoveForLeslieJ started trending on Twitter after she highlighted the abuse she was getting with alot of people showing her support and pleading for her not to leave.
Twitter however did not keep quiet on the development. “This type of abusive behaviour is not permitted on Twitter, and we’ve taken action on many of the accounts reported to us by both Leslie and others. We rely on people to report this type of behaviour to us but we are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to prevent this kind of abuse. We realise we still have a lot of work in front of us before Twitter is where it should be on how we handle these issues,” a spokesman said.
The new Ghostbusters movie stars Leslie Jones along with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon making them the all-female Main actors of the movie.
