Angélique Kidjo just made history… for real! The five-time Grammy winner from Benin has been named to the Hollywood Walk of Fame’s Class of 2026, making her the first Black African artist to receive a star. It’s a huge moment not just for her, but for African music, Black excellence, and global culture.
Kidjo has been a legend for decades. Her music blends Afrobeat, jazz, funk, and soul into a sound that’s unmistakably hers. She’s worked with major artists like Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Alicia Keys, connecting cultures and styles long before “Africa to the world” became a trend.
But this isn’t just about music. It’s about long-overdue recognition as African artists have shaped pop culture for generations, but haven’t always been celebrated on the world’s biggest stages. I’ve been saying for many years now and I will say it again that Kidjo’s star is a clear message: Africa’s influence isn’t just growing – it’s been here.
Angélique Kidjo has been a force to be reckoned with for over 40 years, performing around the world, advocating for women’s rights, and putting African heritage on the map long before today’s commercially popular African stars like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Flavour, Diamond Platnumz, and many others. Hollywood’s just catching up.
The Walk of Fame ceremony is set to happen sometime in 2026, but the exact date hasn’t been shared yet. Honorees have up to two years to plan their unveiling, so it could take a little while. When it does happen, it will be a celebration that reaches far beyond Hollywood. For now, this moment belongs to Kidjo and the millions she represents.
