CAF President Patrice Motsepe Launches African Super League To Boost African Soccer

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe launches African Super League (ASL) to boost and develop African soccer. The African Super League, a new African club competition, shall begin from August 2023 and will be played by 24 teams from 16 African clubs.

All African countries are expected to receive subventions in their respective federations, to develop the soccer game in their countries. This new League is expected to generate $200 million every year, where half of the money will be shared among the 16 clubs and the other $100 million will be invested in African soccer.

While the winners of this competition are expected to walk home with $11.5 million, each participating team is expected to have a women’s team, as well as their own football academy.

Will this advancing development for African club competitions bring about an increase in the amount of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) prize? Let’s hope it does, regardless, this is great news for African soccer.
