Ciara just made a powerful move that goes way beyond music. The global superstar recently traveled to Benin in West Africa and traced her ancestral roots there. What started as a trip turned into a life-changing moment when she was officially granted citizenship by the country.
The ceremony took place in Cotonou on July 26, 2025, during the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, where she was welcomed with love, pride, and a deep cultural connection. Surrounded by Beninese leaders and community members, Ciara accepted her citizenship certificate with emotion and grace. You could see on her face that this wasn’t just a symbolic gesture. It was a return.
Benin recently passed a law offering citizenship to descendants of enslaved Africans as a way to reconnect the African diaspora to its heritage. Ciara became one of the first global public figures to accept this honor. She spoke about how much it meant to stand on the soil of her ancestors and feel a sense of home she had never known before.
While in Benin, she also visited the historic Slave Route and the Door of No Return in Ouidah.
