HBO and UK’s Channel 4 plan to release documentary called “Leaving Neverland” after the premiere of Sundance Film Festival! This was received with mixed reviews and contorversy and many subscribers to the HBO channel took to HBO’s Twitter to say that they would end their HBO subscription if HBO aired the documentary. Many people kept tweeting that Michael Jackson was found not guilty to all counts of all the child sex abuse allegations so why are they bringing this up now and wanting to talk about it when the King of Pop is dead and was found not guilty? Many also noted that HBO might be copying from the Lifetime channel that is currently trending with high ratings from their 6 episode docuseries on R-Kelly and his sexual abuse of minors. Kelly’s docuseries focuses on women who are coming out and speaking out by telling their stories on how they were sexually abused by R-Kelly.
So the question here is – is HBO trying to get high ratings by having a documentary on the late King of Pop as it is rumored that their ratings over the last few years have plummeted and maybe they have seen how they can capitalize from sexual abuse + celebrities like Michael Jackson. We will see how this turns out.
