Have you realized that the more you grow, the more you either lose or gain interest in many things? I know we can’t attribute most of these changes to growth alone but sometimes I think knowledge acquisition has played a huge role on whether we give somethings more of our time or not.
It appears that things that are far from our understanding, snatch our attention more than the things we understand. Why do the things we do not understand garner more attention?
I remember when World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) was one of those shows I never wanted to miss. I would be extremely upset if and when I missed it. At the time, I thought the fighting was real, but the day I discovered that this wasn’t really what I thought it was, I almost immediately lost interest in it.
The same thing applies to award shows. The day you will discover that a good number of awards are not won by merit but by how smart you can be to either lobby or buy out some, you will stop beating yourself for an award. I mean, if an award was really based on merit, a potential nominee would not be taken off a category simply because he or she was dissatisfied by how the award is being run. Their name should remain on the list of nominees because they earned it.
When award organizers start playing unfair games by removing peoples names from a category they were nominated for, that only confirm my thoughts that these awards shows can be manipulated. If an award organizer who has a say in who gets nominated or not does not like a particular artist for whatever reason, and if under normal circumstances the artist should have been nominated for lets say Best Song, there is a high chance that the artists name will not make it to the list of nominees. It’s a shame but it’s true.
The same logic applies to TV reality shows. Even TV reality shows will lose more followers when many become versed with many of their ways. I watched the Big Brother Naija show last night, and I was not all carried away as I would have been a few years ago during its early years.
Take nothing away from the organization and display, if you are watching these shows primarily for entertainment purposes and are not putting your heart and emotions into it, you will be less bothered whatsoever. However, if you are emotionally vested in these reality TV shows, the day you will discover that many reality shows are already set up in a controlled manner, i.e. subtly scripted to tell a particular narrative to make the show entertaining, you will most likely start loosing interest in them because they will start to seem more and more like a controlled experiment with the participants being the guinea pigs.
Believe me, I know because I’ve been there!
