She managed to rip the dog off them and called a family friend who is a nurse to help the tots. The nurse gave the girls first aid before they were taken to Maria Pedreira Barbosa Municipal Hospital, with doctors saying one of the girls was declared dead on arrival, while the other was in a serious condition and later died too.

If you have pets, especially bigger sized dogs, it is very important to monitor and train them around younger kids at all times especially new born babies until they are comfortable with being around them. This is because dogs are usually attention seekers and do not understand that babies and young kids need attention too.
So like humans, they get jealous and need to be trained to understand that they will not always be attended to when they want it. Do not assume that if your dog is generally friendly, that he will be automatically be fine with babies or kids. Remember that they can sense when you are ignoring them which is usually the case when a newly born baby is introduced to the family as babies need a lot of attention 24 hours of the day. Some dogs become very needy that they see the baby as a threat the same way they would see another dog in their territory.
