Many entertainment lovers, know Kang Quintus as one of the leading film strategist in the growing Cameroonian film industry, but very few know about the story and the motivation that made him that.
Before overtaking film stats with “The Fisherman’s Diary” , a movie that won over 80 awards, most of them even before its premiere, Kang had a different story that had very little to do with the movie industry.
While studying at the Universtiy of Buea during his undergraduate university days, Kang was a smart student intelligent that he would organize accounting tutorials and and tutor his peers. Being smart wasn’t all about book work but monetarily too.
Coming from a humble background, where he couldn’t afford three meals a day, he was still ambitious and believed he could change situations not only for himself but for his family too. It didn’t take long for him to make that long lasting impression especially when he moved to Belgium to further his studies.
While studying in Belgium, Kang would offer his apartment to his Cameroonian girlfriend’s older sister, who lived in Poland, to shoot her movie. Still at this juncture, he was still less attracted to the movie industry. When this movie was being filmed, the lead actor was not performing as expected. Kang who found himself behind the cameras during the filming process, was busy directing the lead actor on how to go about his moves.
This prompted the movie crew to call him on set. When he accepted to appear on set, his execution was commended and that’s how the actor and film maker who’d change the narrative about Cameroon entertainment industry was born.
Kang later flew to America to further his studies in Accounting with “Actor” already added to his C. He got his PhD in Accounting in the US, and this was the beginning of a new dawn. It would now be more than just wanting to act in movies, but it was a second hustle after his main hustle.
Being a business person and an entrepreneur, who always wants to make the difference, he dived fully into the movie business. His coming into the movie industry has not only birthed new belief, but has created countless opportunities for movie stars, musicians and others that you can list.
His movie, “The Fisherman’s Diary” was filmed for a reported sum of 33,000,000 CFA. The movie has amassed without doubts more than four times the invested amount, securing endorsement deals with renowned brands like Kadji and Orange Cameroon. The movie is equally one of the first ever Cameroonian movies to be acquired by Netflix and got a pre-selection at the Oscars though it didn’t make the shortlist.
Moving forward, “Nganù” is the next big thing in line. A movie that has been in anticipation for the time being, is almost near completion.
Being labeled as the “Indomitable Lion” of the Cameroonian film industry, goes beyond a hype, as it’s reality and words are highly backed by accomplishments and results.
Howbeit it, that a non-movie enthusiast, became the biggest admiration and inspiration to not just the young generation, but an industry that has faced stagnation over a long period of time ? The answer is simple, it’s either things are done the Star way or they’re not done at all. That’s according to Kang’s mindset which works marvelously for him.
