The kidney community mourns the loss of a dedicated advocate for kidney disease. Iya Bekondo, founder of The Iya Foundation, passed away in Boston, Massachusetts on the evening of July 10, 2024, six days after her second kidney transplant.
Diagnosed with kidney disease at a young age, Iya Bekondo spent her life raising awareness about the condition through social media and The Iya Foundation – Kidney Resource Center, which she established.
In 2005, she received her first kidney transplant from her mother, Rose Bekondo, who continues to live well with one kidney. However, in 2021, 16 years later, Iya faced kidney complications, leading to dialysis and a renewed wait for a donor kidney.
Despite sharing the challenges of having dialysis three times a week and of the waitlist – up to five years long – on her social platforms, Iya remained steadfast in educating and advocating for kidney health and donation. In April 2024, her attempt at a second transplant was unsuccessful, but she persisted in her advocacy.
Finally, on July 10, 2024, after nearly three years of dialysis, Iya received her second kidney transplant. Her sudden passing shocked many, as she had spoken positively to friends and family until her last day, grateful for the transplant that offered her renewed hope and freedom from dialysis. She was 41 years old.
Throughout her journey, Iya collaborated with numerous organizations, spreading awareness not only about kidney disease but also supporting various unrelated projects. Her unwavering dedication and selflessness have left a lasting impact, earning her admiration as a hero in the eyes of many.
The kidney community mourns the loss of this heroic advocate, and the world will undoubtedly miss courageous individuals like her.
