A recent development could be of great interest to Nigerian social media content creators, particularly those on Instagram and Facebook.
Despite Nigeria’s sizable population, its social media giants have previously not had access to monetization features, leading creators to rely on alternative methods to generate income from their accounts.
However, according to recent announcements from Meta headquarters, Nigerians will gain the ability to monetize their content starting June 2024.
In March, the President of Meta led a delegation that met with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to present their project. Meta’s feedback to its users indicated that Nigerians would indeed become eligible for monetization starting in June.
Initially, there were concerns about whether the monetization program would be exclusive to Instagram users. Nevertheless, there has been confirmation that Facebook users in Nigeria will also have the opportunity to monetize their content from the same period onwards.
A statement from Meta’s team obtained by Legit Naija read:
Sir Clegg, Meta representative said Meta will introduce in June 2024 a feature on its Instagram app that will allow Nigerian creators to monetize their content to enable them to earn a living using the app.
“Yes, starting June 2024, creators in Nigeria will be eligible to monetise their content. We’re working to bring our creator monetisation products to Nigeria, to begin rolling out in June. This means creators, who meet the monetisation eligibility criteria, will have the ability to run ads in-stream and use other tools such as Instagram stars and gifts that are available to creators elsewhere in the world.”
“Monetisation won’t be limited to just Instagram. Nigerian creators eligible to use our monetisation products will be able to also monetise on Facebook as well. We’re working diligently to make these monetisation features available for Nigerian creators in June and our team is dedicated to a swift rollout.
Many other African countries are not eligible for monetization but they’re hoping Nigeria’s eligibility will influence theirs.
