7 ICONIC AFRICAN MUSIC GROUPS (BANDS) YOU SHOULD KNOW
4. Toofan:
This African music group stands out as one of the most creative and enduring in the industry, maintaining their unity, commitment, and love for the art since 2005. Interestingly, their journey began through a shared passion for soccer. Despite originally intending to pursue careers in soccer, they found their true calling in music.
Of Cameroonian and Togolese descent, Menah Ayo, also known as Barabas, relocated from Cameroon to Toquoin Séminaire, a neighborhood in Lomé. Shortly after, Fantohou Kossivi, aka Masta, moved to the same neighborhood with his family. Initially, Barabas hesitated to accept Masta into their soccer games, but as they say, “soccer unifies people.” Their friendship blossomed through sports, and the rest, as they say, is history.
With each successive hit, they’ve cemented their status as Africa’s most dynamic music group, showcasing their talents for fifteen years and counting. Along the way, they’ve played an important role in shaping the narrative of African music.
5. Sauti Sol:
Kenyan music group Sauti Sol since 2005 till present.
Sauti Sol, also known as the fabulous four, is a Kenyan afro-pop band formed in Nairobi, Kenya, back in 2005. The group originally started as just singers – Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi – singing without any instruments. Later, guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined, and that’s when they named themselves Sauti Sol.
They’re a group of young black men who are proud of their black skin and always put it first. Signed to Universal Music Africa, they’ve worked really hard over the years to spread their music beyond Kenya and Africa. For more than 15 years, Sauti Sol has been known for their great music and for promoting African culture. It’s not common to see a group of people stick together and pursue the same goal for over 15 years.
