In the past few days, the media has not been a playground for rapists, as the campaign for “Say No To Rape” relatively multiplied. Many have somehow tried to defend the malicious act of rape by accusing how most women dress. In my opinion, dressing shouldn’t justify why a man should rape a woman and as far as rape is concern, a woman automatically is stripped off her rights of not being in the mood to go down the sexual intercourse road.
It is somewhat hypocritical to say that indecent dressing does not play a role in arousing sexual thoughts. But men should be able to walk away from a scene if can’t caution himself except he was seduced, and even.
Women who appear sexually appealing and know it, but don’t try to protect themselves and rather go on to play the “I don’t give a damn” attitude, tend to provoke the situation and always end up battling with not just the men but with the society, especially the African society whose cultural values tend to downgrade women who are or tend to be sexually provocative.
We should then forget about mature women who get raped, but what about children who get raped too? How sexual appealing are they? How indecently dressed are they?
The fight against rape should not be offered any justification, but instead, the collective strategies to fight this inhuman act must be inherently battled. Women play an important role in helping men to battle rape. We are not saying that it is a woman’s fault if she is raped. All we are saying is that women have much more power in the matter. at the same time, men should provide full support to women by shunning the act of rape and not stigmatizing the rape victim.
Singer Daphne Njie has been bashed for this photo which she posted just days after she opened up about her raped story. But we might just be getting too carried away because this might have been a photo from her upcoming single.
