The world of soccer is in deep sadness after the unexpected death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota. The Liverpool striker passed away in a tragic car accident in the early hours of July 3, 2025. The crash happened at kilometer 65 of the A52 highway near Cernadilla in Zamora, Spain. Diogo Jota was traveling with his brother André Silva when their car lost control. Reports say that a rear tire blew out while they were overtaking another vehicle. The Lamborghini went off the road and caught fire. Both Diogo and his brother died at the scene. Emergency services arrived quickly but could do nothing to save them.

Just days before the accident, Diogo had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22, 2025. The couple had three children and had recently shared a joyful wedding video on social media. His last Instagram post included the words “A day we will never forget” with a white heart emoji. The news of his death shocked fans, clubs, and players around the world.

Diogo Jota was only 28 years old. He was born in Porto, Portugal, and began his professional career with Pacos de Ferreira. He then moved to FC Porto and later joined Atletico Madrid, although he never played a game for them. Jota made his big mark when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in England. There, he helped the team win promotion to the Premier League by winning the EFL Championship in the 2017–2018 season.
In 2020, he signed with Liverpool, where he became one of the club’s top forwards. At Liverpool, he won many important trophies. He helped the team win the Premier League title in the 2024–2025 season. He also won the FA Cup in 2021–2022. Jota lifted the EFL Cup twice with Liverpool in 2021–2022 and again in 2023–2024.
For his country, Portugal, he played an important role in several tournaments. He was part of the national team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2018–2019 and again in 2024–2025. Diogo Jota was not only a talented footballer but also a hardworking and humble teammate. His death is a big loss not only for Liverpool and Portugal but for the entire football family.
Many people from the football world and beyond have shared emotional tributes.

“This is a moment where I struggle. There must be a bigger purpose. But I can’t see it. I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father. We will miss you so much. All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them. Rest in peace. Love, J.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, his national teammate, wrote:
“It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, just now you were married. To your family, your wife, your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
The Premier League issued a message saying:
