The qualification journey for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now almost complete, and the excitement is rising across every continent. This World Cup will be special because it will have forty eight teams instead of thirty two, which means more countries than ever before will participate. The tournament will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, who are already qualified automatically as hosts. The other forty five places are being decided through qualification matches across the different soccer confederations.
Each continent has a certain number of direct qualification spots and some additional spots that are decided through play-offs. There will also be an inter-confederation play-off tournament in March 2026 that will bring together six teams from different continents. They will compete for the final two spots at the World Cup. These six teams will come from Africa, Asia, South America, Oceania, and two from North and Central America.
So far, most of the qualified nations are already known, while some regions still have a few places left to fight for. Here is the full picture as of mid-October 2025.
THE HOST NATIONS
As hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the United States, Canada, and Mexico have already secured their qualification automatically. They will not take part in the qualification matches, allowing them to focus on preparing their teams and stadiums for the global event.
AFRICA (CAF)
Africa has been given nine direct qualification spots and one place in the inter-confederation play-offs. The qualification campaign in Africa has been very competitive, but the group winners have already sealed their tickets to the tournament. The nine countries that have officially qualified are Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Ivory Coast, and Senegal.
Cape Verde’s qualification is historic because it is their first ever appearance at a World Cup. These countries earned their places by finishing top of their respective groups.
However, the story is not completely over for Africa. Four teams that finished second in their groups will enter a mini play-off tournament to determine who gets the continent’s inter-confederation play-off spot. The teams that will compete are Cameroon, DR Congo, Gabon, and Nigeria. The Confederation of African Football has confirmed that these play-off matches, including the semi-finals and the final, will be played in Morocco in November 2025. The winner will then face other continental play-off winners in the inter-confederation tournament to fight for one of the two remaining global spots.
ASIA (AFC)
Asia has been allocated eight direct qualification slots and one place in the inter-confederation play-offs. Seven of those direct places have already been taken by Japan, South Korea, Iran, Australia, Uzbekistan, Jordan, and Qatar. These countries have been dominant in Asian soccer for many years and will once again represent the continent on the world stage.
One direct slot remains open, and that place is being contested. There is also one inter-confederation play-off slot for Asia. Teams like Iraq and UAE are expected to fight for that play-off place. The final results from the Asian qualifiers will be confirmed soon, and the winning sides will join the rest of the qualified nations in 2026.
SOUTH AMERICA (CONMEBOL)
South America has always been known for producing some of the best soccer teams in the world, and their qualification race is usually intense. The continent has six direct qualification places and one inter-confederation play-off place. The six countries that have already secured their spots are Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
These nations continue to lead South American soccer, with Argentina once again showing strong form after winning the 2022 World Cup. The team that will represent South America in the inter-confederation play-off is Bolivia, who finished just outside the top six. They will have one final chance to qualify when they take part in the play-off tournament in March 2026.
OCEANIA (OFC)
Oceania has one direct World Cup slot and one inter-confederation play-off slot. New Zealand has claimed the direct qualification spot after dominating the regional qualifiers. The inter-confederation play-off slot will likely be contested by one of the smaller island nations, but the details are yet to be finalized. New Zealand continues to be the strongest team in this region, having represented Oceania at several World Cups in the past.
EUROPE (UEFA)
Europe has sixteen total qualification spots, which makes it the continent with the most representatives at the World Cup. The top teams that win their qualifying groups automatically qualify. So far, twelve group winners have already booked their places, including England, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Hungary, Switzerland, Scotland, and Turkey.
The remaining four spots will be decided through the UEFA play-offs. These play-offs will involve the runners-up from the qualifying groups as well as some top teams from the UEFA Nations League. Countries like Poland, Ukraine, Norway, Czech Republic, and Iceland are among those who will take part in these crucial matches. The draw for the play-offs will determine who faces who, and only four nations will make it through to complete Europe’s sixteen representatives.
NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA (CONCACAF)
In North and Central America, three teams are already qualified automatically as hosts: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. CONCACAF has six direct slots in total, meaning three more places remain open. There are also two inter-confederation play-off slots available.
Several nations, including Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Honduras, and Trinidad and Tobago, are still battling in the qualification rounds to secure these final places. The remaining matches will determine who joins the hosts and who will go through the play-offs to try for one last opportunity to reach the World Cup.
THE GLOBAL PICTURE AND WHAT IS LEFT
With most of the qualification races nearly done, the final phase will focus on play-offs and inter-confederation matches. The inter-confederation play-off tournament in March 2026 will bring together six nations from across the continents. They will play for the final two spots at the World Cup.
In total, almost all forty eight spots have been filled, but a few remain open for teams still fighting in their play-offs. For Africa, the CAF play-offs will decide one team that goes into the inter-confederation tournament. For Asia, one direct and one play-off spot are yet to be settled. For Europe, four places are still up for grabs through their own play-offs. For South America, Bolivia will fight in the inter-confederation stage, and for Oceania, one smaller team may still join the global play-off round.
The 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most exciting tournaments in history. With forty eight teams coming from every corner of the world, it will be a celebration of global soccer like never before. Fans are waiting eagerly to see which countries will take the last few spots and complete the full list of qualified teams for this historic event.
