A lot of fans have been asking why the highly anticipated PSG vs Marseille clash is taking place tonight, the very same night as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris. It’s a fair question, especially since PSG has the most players nominated in the top 30 and their coach is also tipped to win an award. So why would a match be scheduled at the same time, effectively preventing key figures from attending?
The answer comes down to unfortunate timing and unforeseen circumstances. The match was originally set to be played on Sunday, September 21st. However, due to severe weather warnings in the Marseille region including storms, heavy rain, and flood risks the authorities had no choice but to postpone the game for safety reasons.
Under French league regulations, when a match is postponed due to weather, it’s typically rescheduled for the very next day. And that’s exactly what happened here as the game was moved to Monday, September 22nd, which just so happens to be the same evening the Ballon d’Or ceremony is taking place in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
The overlap is purely coincidental and wasn’t part of the original schedule. In fact, there were reports that PSG tried to have the match moved earlier in the day to allow attendance at the ceremony, but that proposal didn’t go through. Between limited calendar flexibility, broadcasting commitments, and league regulations, rescheduling the match for another day wasn’t feasible.
So in the end, it’s just a case of bad luck and unavoidable scheduling conflict. Definitely not ideal for the players, staff, or fans but safety came first, and the league had to adapt quickly.
