American superstar singers Rihanna and Chris Brown were love birds who understood each other and would have done anything for each other, that is, before their imperfections ruined everything they had built to develop their relationship.
Their relationship went from good to bad and bad to worse, following their on-and-off fights when they were dating. While speaking with Oprah Winfrey about her relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna said:
“It was embarrassing, it was humiliating, it was hurtful, you know! It’s not easy. I Lost my best friend… like everything I knew switched, switched overnight.”
In 2009, Rihanna appeared at the Grammy Awards with a swollen faced that even the best makeup could not hide. It was unusual, but the “Umbrella” singer was in pain, after suffering physical attack by her then boyfriend Chris Brown.
Following Rihanna’s story, there is no doubt that the singer is a lover and had always been. However, coming from a background where she had witnessed domestic violence, it was obvious she was not going to sign up for a similar situation but as life would have it, she ended up falling in love with someone who was brutal to her after every misunderstanding they had.
Their relationship was admirable to many of their fans who were obsessed with them being a young, and famous couple as they considered them as the perfect young black celebrity couple, almost the same way fans and paparazzi were obsessed with Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie when they dated and later got married resulting in fans creating the name “Brangelina”.
The truth is, fans thought Rihanna and Chris Brown were perfect together only because many did not know what was happening behind closed doors until the Grammy Award night in 2009. At this stage, it was already beyond repair as Chris Brown would end up paying tremendously for his actions towards his girlfriend at the time. Despite the court restraining the “Little More” singer from Rihanna, they still ended being in contact with one another.
Rihanna revealed in an interview with Oprah in 2012 that she had forgiven Chris. It was obvious the bad girl was still in love with his ex and was willing to patch things up irregardless of what they had been through. Their relationship did not go anywhere following media backlash and fans unwillingness to see both of them back together.
In 2017, Chris Brown admitted that he still loved Rihanna. He said,
“I’m Judy going to be honest,, we were fighting each other, she’ll hit me and I’ll hit her. It was never okay… it was always at a point where we hit each other and I was like what the f*ck are we doing?”
Even though Rihanna admitted several times to the media that she felt Brown was the man for her and that he was made for her, 14 years later, they are still doing great with their respective career but definitely not as boyfriend and girlfriend nor as husband and wife. Chris has continued to stay relevant in the music game, garnering more fans and gaining popularity over the years, while Rihanna has become a very successful beauty and fashion entrepreneur, is now a billionaire and has recently gone back to making music, even if slowly but surely.
Rihanna is currently expecting her second child with boyfriend Asap Rocky after welcoming their first child in May 2022. Somethings are certainly not meant to be, like Chris and Rihanna. No matter how you love someone, there should never be room for domestic violence.
