Earlier this month, Cameroonian broadcast Journalist Mimi Mefo was named the 2019 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award Journalism winner. Mimi who is one of less than a handful of journalists working without fear or favor in Cameroon’s climate of repression and self-censorship, received her award at London’s Mayfair Hotel on April 4th, 2019. She told attendees: “This award is for those who stood and have continued to stand for press freedom.”
Awards were presented in four categories: Arts, Campaigning, Digital Activism and Journalism. The winners are: Kurdish artist Zehra Doğan (Arts); Cartoonists Rights Network International, which campaigns on behalf of cartoonists globally (Campaigning); Colombia’s Fundación Karisma, which tackles online trolls and internet restrictions (Digital activism); and Cameroonian broadcast Journalist Mimi Mefo (journalism).

“This year’s winners join a global network of free expression champions who deserve our admiration and support,” said Index on Censorship CEO Jodie Ginsberg. “They, like all of those nominated, face huge personal and political hurdles in their fight so that others can express themselves freely.”
