Former Soccer Player George Weah Becomes Liberia’s New President

In the race for President, former Liberian soccer player George Weah won his opponent Vice President Joseph Boakai with Weah amassing 61.5%of the ballots and Boakai 38.5%. On December 29th, 2017 according to the National Elections Committee (NEC), a little over 1.2 million people voted with voter turnout being 55.8%.

Liberia has already undergone two civil wars and a change was needed to cater to the countries devastated state. George Weah ran under the CDC party while Vice President Joseph Boakai ran under the Unity party. According to the National Elections Committee (NEC), a little over 1.2 million people voted with voter turnout being 55.8%.
