Is there anything that Nigerians can’t do? You name it, they’ve done it. You can name a number of extraordinary things they have been doing and are still doing. On May 1st, 2019, Playfre, a Nigerian based audio streaming platform that lets users listen to music for free was successfully created. With over 45 million songs in its database, Playre is one of the largest music streaming platforms in Africa.

It was created by a Nigerian computer programmer, Chika Nwaogu, with objective to rival Spotify and deliver Africa focused content. It is the first indigenous streaming portal. Chika, when asked about the project some few months ago said,
“Spotify and many other big music streaming platforms have not opened their doors to most African countries because of the weak intellectual property laws, currently obtainable in the most parts of the world, thus making the apps unavailable for the African population, and the ones who have opened their doors , still charge a monthly fee for unlimited music streaming”
According to the CEO, the good thing about the app is that it lets you listen to over 45 million songs with a Spotify experience, providing the same opportunity like other big music platforms but it is free as compared to them.

Just after six months of being launched, the Playfre platform is set to expand to 13 other African countries. The countries include Uganda, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Bostwana, Cote D’ivore, Liberia, Malawi, Eswatini, Tunisia, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania and Mauritius.
Playfre has a library of over 50 million songs and two million artists, making it the largest in Africa. It has increasingly grown, with at least 250 streams per registered user on the platform. The app is available for downloads on Google Play store for all Android smart phones users.
‘We have become Africa’s first solution to Spotify, we at Playfre are trying to bring over 50 million songs to you at no charge.”
– saY the CEO
This a huge solution to difficulties faced by African users of expensive international streaming platforms, that should not be taken for granted.
