South African Ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa, was found dead on September 30, 2025, at the foot of the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile hotel. He had been reported missing the night before after sending a message to his wife expressing intentions to end his life. Authorities found that the hotel room window had been forced open, and French prosecutors are investigating the circumstances of his death.
Mthethwa had a long career in South African politics, serving as Minister of Police and Minister of Arts and Culture, with both achievements and controversies marking his tenure. The South African government expressed deep sorrow, with President Cyril Ramaphosa offering condolences to his family. Investigations continue as the diplomatic community and citizens seek answers to this tragic loss.
