Meet a student who killed a teacher today in Yaounde, Cameroon. This is about the seventh case of a student either stabbing a teacher or a fellow student in recent times in Cameroon.
In November of 2019, two students stabbed a discipline master for doing his job properly as they considered him a stumbling block in a school in Bafoussam, Cameroon. As early as January 14, 2019, another student stabbed a teacher in a school in Yaounde. Where are we headed with these acts of violence as it is becoming a lifestyle among the youths.
Are the youth watching too much TV and taking what they see such as “killings on TV or in movies” literally? Are they too involved with social media and the internet where there is freedom of speech and people share almost everything from “freeing yourself from your “evil” teachers who are out to “get students” to how to commit suicide?
Something must be done about this as it is obvious that there is a problem with a growing number of teachers dying under the hands of their students. It is not clear if these students who have killed someone are from troubled homes or if they have any emotional disorders. We are not giving any excuses for them but we cannot rule out these possibilities as well since depression is a very touchy topic among African and many Africans would rather not “deal with it”. Whatever the case, we can agree that if there is a killing of a peer or teacher popping up on the news every month, then Houston, we have a problem and it needs to be dealt with accordingly.
QUESTION:
If you are a parent, what do you suggest to stop these heinous acts by students?
