Rumors have it that the Ugandan government is set to announce a the reintroduction of the “Gay Bill” law which prohibits homosexuality in their Country. So many social media reactions have shown some sort of dissatisfaction by the LGBTQ community as the Ugandan government might yet be reintroducing the anti gay law in the coming weeks.
According to the Daily mail.com, the Ugandan government plans to bring back the ‘’Kill the gay Bill’’ which was nullified some five years, ago based on technicality. With Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in support, the government looks to not only punish homosexuality with death sentence, but also criminalize those who are involved in the promotion or recruitment of it. There has been condemnation and backlash of the news on social media.
Many activists and members of the LGBTQ community have expressed that the bill will result in increased targeted violent scenes and increased hate crimes. According to Pepe Julian Onziema, who is from the sexual Minority in Uganda says that three gay men and one transgender woman have already been murdered in the homophobic attacks this year, the latest last week when a gay man was bludgeoned to death.
