This post won’t sound well to many but it is not supposed to anyways!
We have always said that expectations hurt when they are not met, and this is one of those situations where fan expectation wasn’t met. Cameroonian fans consider artists as their voices, their mediators and you can understand why they get worried when the artist are mute when they expect them to speak.
Artists get too upset and rather think that the fans disrespect them so much and they don’t care whether they die or live. However, it is good to understand that it is the fans who make you and once you can’t stand for them, don’t expect them to hype you. It’s not about being defensive Everytime. It’s about seeing it from the fans/people’s perspective too.
Yesterday November 1, 2020 marked a day Cameroonian artists (Singers, actors, Comedians etc) stepped out in Yaounde to do a peaceful protest after the Government granted them permission to do so.
Artists traveled from other regions of the country just for the course and the feedback from the media has been wild. The media has not had it with the artists, as they believe the artists didn’t live up to expectations but rather went for a “Photo shoot” session.
It should be noted that these artists had met at Bistro 89 on Monday, to talk about the way forward and the Peaceful Protest in Yaounde was the way forward. Many weren’t expecting a riot nor a protest with objects on the streets, but rather a peaceful March, denouncing the unlawful killings and the continuous crisis.
In an attempt to defend the failed trip to Yaounde, most of the artists have claimed that it wasn’t a march pass but a session where artists would come together to deliberate the way forward. So this now poses a question of “What was the importance of the meeting at Bistro”?
It’s also worth noting, that the opportunity the artists had to express the the worries of the people and theirs might never present itself again.
Marching in Yaounde had to be felt by the population that doesn’t believe something is happening in the Crisis infested areas. They needed to see and feel that desire for change, but guess what ? These artist went and spoke almost amongst themselves.
So how was this mission accomplished? No one is neglecting the efforts and push to drive change, but it should be admitted that the artists didn’t use the opportunity like that comes only once in a life time.
Were you pleased with the approach by artists? Let’s know what you think.
