The Cameroon music scene in 2024 has been hit with some significant trends, some of which shook the industry uncontrollably. Out of the many trends in 2024, here some of the ones we consider the trendiest and most influential.
1. SHWENG KING CHALLENGE : The Cameroonian music industry was hit by a wave of challenges this year and one of them that made its way on this list is the “Shweng King Challenge” which started like a simple Tiktok trend but later became a challenge that we’ll not forget in a hurry. The challenge didn’t only gave a spotlight to some undercover music artists but created an advocacy against drug abuse.
This challenge is equivalent to the “Don’t Do Drugs” campaign but it was done in a musical format. It created one of the hottest controversies in 2024 as most artists like PEACE-T, ASKIA, were at loggerheads as Askia who hadn’t been part of the challenge initially, was later selected to be on the final project, which saw PEACE-T and a host of other artists dropped eventually. Because this is an advocacy against drug abuse, we think it deserves to be in the list of top five trends
2. VIVIANE REMIX :
“Viviane challenge” happened to be one of the biggest trends in 2024. The trend didn’t only hit the Cameroon music industry. It was a global trend, thanks to Ivorian singer Debordo for igniting the trend which turned out to revive the career of veteran Cameroonian singer Prince Aimé. It should be noted that Prince Aimé’s “Viviane” song was released 20 years ago, but it turned out to be a career serving tune because the official remix of the song set a new record as it became the first ever Cameroonian song to hit 4million views in less than 24 hours. The remix alone, proved that Cameroonian artists could come together do big things. In terms of numbers and reach, this is definitely bigger than the Shweng King Challenge but the only reason why the Shweng King Challenge is above it, is because of its significance.
3. BAD NOVA – HALA MADRID :
Cameroonian singer BAD NOVA has had nothing but a successful 2024. The singer first released “On Fait comment” at the beginning of the year and then went on to release a track that propelled him to the Santiago Bernabeu in the Spanish Capital. BAD NOVA’s “Halla Madrid” a tribute song to Real Madrid players was quickly embraced on Tiktok after Madrid winger Vinicius shared the song on his Instagram story. The song has now gone on to surpass Libianca’s “People” as the most-used Cameroonian song on Tiktok with approximately 2million videos
With over 10 million views on YouTube in one month, there’s no way he’s not in the list of top Cameroonian music trends in 2024.
4. GASHA VS EDDY KENZO: Another topic that trended for several months in 2024 is Gasha’s royalty cry as she complained about being ripped by Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo following their 2013 collaboration. Eddy Kenzo categorically sat on all of Gasha’s royalties despite after being compensated at the time of the making of the song. The topic trended for several months in the Cameroon media space but it was not different from pouring water on a horse’s back as it didn’t yield any fruit and left Gasha with no choice than to live to fight another day.
5. JOVI’S UNITED KINGDOM TOUR : For the first time since 2012, Cameroonian rapper Jovi had never done an official show out of Africa before 2024, despite having an illustrious career spanning a decade plus…
As a matter of fact, Jovi’s going to the UK was one of the trendiest topics in the music industry this year. While many persons like Jovi’s fans were excited to watch their idol make his first European appearance, the rapper who had, had several clashes with his colleagues and his competitors in the past was being watched by them and of course, had a point to prove. Incidentally, the show was a success afterall and we must add it to the list as one of our hottest trends. Jovi also dropped an Exodus Freestyle that suddenly became a big challenge across Tiktok.
