The community of Evergreen in Colorado has been left in shock after a tragic shooting at Evergreen High School that took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, during the school day. The events unfolded quickly and left students, parents, teachers and the entire state struggling to make sense of the violence that turned an ordinary day of learning into a nightmare. Reports from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and local media give a clear picture of what happened and how authorities responded.
The shooting began around midday when a male student who was still a juvenile entered the school with a revolver handgun. Witnesses reported hearing loud popping sounds and many students initially thought it was something harmless before realizing it was gunfire. Panic immediately spread as students tried to protect themselves, some hiding in classrooms while others ran from the building. The shooter opened fire both inside and outside the school which created confusion for law enforcement as they tried to secure different areas of the campus.
Two students were shot during the incident. One of them was critically injured and rushed to the hospital while the other had non life threatening injuries. Their identities have not been made public as of now to respect their families’ privacy. A possible fourth person was also taken to a hospital after being hurt while fleeing, although that situation has not been clearly explained yet by the authorities. The shooter eventually turned the weapon on himself and suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
Police responded extremely quickly after receiving emergency calls. Officers were on the scene in about two minutes and made contact with the suspect within about five minutes. This quick reaction is being credited with preventing an even larger tragedy. No police officers fired their weapons during the confrontation. The sheriff’s office has already begun an investigation and is working on search warrants for the shooter’s home, car and locker to try to understand what led to the attack. The motive remains unknown.
The community response has been one of heartbreak and concern. Parents rushed to the school not knowing whether their children were safe. A reunification center was set up at Bergen Meadow Elementary School where students could be picked up by their families. Many described the fear of waiting and the relief of finally being reunited. Students who witnessed the events have spoken about the terror of hearing gunshots and running for safety. These stories highlight the emotional impact that will remain long after the physical wounds have healed.
All after school activities at Evergreen High School were cancelled and officials have said counseling and mental health support will be provided for students, staff and families. Colorado has faced several tragic school shootings in its history and each incident brings renewed debate about safety in schools and the need for stronger preventive measures. Leaders in the community have called for unity and support for the victims as well as thoughtful conversations on how to protect students in the future.
The Evergreen High School shooting is a painful reminder of how quickly violence can destroy lives and disrupt a community. As investigations continue, what remains clear is the courage of the students who survived, the quick action of law enforcement and the resilience of a community that is now grieving together. The coming days will bring more answers but for now the focus is on healing, supporting the wounded, and standing with the families who have been most deeply affected.
Sheriff Reggie Marinelli of Jefferson County said during a press conference that the tragedy will leave scars on the Evergreen community but her office will do everything possible to uncover the truth about what happened. She praised the speed and bravery of the first responders who entered the school almost immediately and reassured parents that their children’s safety will remain a top priority. Evergreen High School Principal Kerri Bundren also released a message to parents saying that the school family is heartbroken but will stand strong together. She emphasized that students and staff will be given full support in the days ahead and thanked the community for rallying in such a difficult time.
