On August 28, 2025, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, the director of the CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, resigned in protest against what he described as the politicization of public health under the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and President Donald Trump. In a scathing resignation letter, Daskalakis accused the administration of manipulating health data, suppressing scientific dialogue, and undermining the agency’s credibility, particularly concerning marginalized communities such as transgender individuals and those living with HIV.
Daskalakis’s resignation followed the abrupt dismissal of CDC Director Susan Monarez, who had been in office for less than a month. The White House announced her termination after she allegedly refused to resign, a claim her attorneys strongly contested, stating she had neither resigned nor received formal notification of termination. Monarez had been confirmed as CDC director just weeks earlier, on July 29, following President Trump’s nomination.
The ousting of Monarez and the subsequent resignations of top officials, including Daskalakis, Dr. Debra Houry, and Dr. Daniel Jernigan, have raised serious concerns about the future of evidence-based policy and trust in national health institutions. These developments coincide with the Trump administration’s announcement narrowing COVID-19 vaccine eligibility, further fueling tensions within the CDC.
In his resignation letter, Daskalakis expressed deep concern over manipulated data, suppression of scientific dialogue, lack of transparency, and politicized changes in immunization policies that, he warned, endanger children, pregnant individuals, and marginalized groups, including the transgender and HIV-positive communities.
This upheaval in public health leadership underscores the growing instability within top U.S. health institutions during a critical time. The situation has prompted widespread alarm among public health experts and advocates, who fear that the erosion of scientific integrity and the politicization of health policy could have long-lasting detrimental effects on public trust and health outcomes.
As the CDC grapples with this leadership crisis, the future of public health policy in the United States remains uncertain. The agency’s ability to navigate these challenges and restore its credibility will be crucial in addressing ongoing and future health threats.
