Yes you read that right! The U.S. just introduced a one time one hundred thousand dollar fee for new H1B visa applications. If you are trying to come to the US for the first time on a work visa your future employer now has to pay $100,000 just to file your petition.
This new rule dropped in September 2025 and it does not affect people already on H1B visas or those renewing. It only hits new applicants which includes recent graduates or professionals outside the U.S. looking to enter the American job market for the first time.
For African and Black professionals this makes an already tough system even harder. Employers might think twice before hiring international talent because of the price tag. Smaller companies and startups are likely out of the picture and big companies may limit sponsorships to only very specialized roles. This shift also means fewer chances for those just starting out or working in fields where visas were already hard to secure. Unless a company really wants you, the U.S. may no longer be the most accessible option.
Now is a good time to look at other countries where African talent is in demand. Canada, the UK, Germany and remote global roles are becoming more attractive and realistic – the US is still an option but it is not the only one.
This policy is a big deal but it is not the end. Stay sharp, stay connected and remember African professionals have always found ways to thrive globally.
