School Taught You Everything Except How To Make Money
Let’s be honest for a second. The idea that you must go to university to be successful is slowly losing its grip, and a lot of people are still trying to catch up to that reality.
For years, the script was simple. Go to school, get a degree, find a stable job, and you are set. That path is not completely useless today, but it is no longer the only way to win. What is changing now is not just education, it is how value is measured. Employers are no longer impressed by certificates alone. They want to see what you can actually do.
This shift is being powered by technology, and it is happening fast. Every day, new tools, platforms, and systems are being introduced, and companies need people who can use them confidently. Coding, data analysis, cybersecurity, digital marketing. These are not just fancy words anymore. They are real skills that companies are actively paying for. And the truth is, you cannot fake your way through them. Either you know how to do the work or you do not.
That is why companies like Google, Apple, and IBM are no longer obsessed with degrees the way they used to be. They are paying more attention to skills, portfolios, and real experience. If you can solve problems, build things, and deliver results, you already have their attention.
Another thing people are not talking about enough is how fast information expires. You can spend four years studying something, graduate, and realize the industry has already moved on. Meanwhile, someone learning online can update their knowledge every few months and stay ahead. That flexibility is a serious advantage.
Then there is the money side of it. University is expensive, and for many people, it comes with long term financial pressure. On the other hand, learning tech skills can be far more accessible. There are platforms that allow people to learn high income skills without breaking the bank. That alone is changing who gets access to opportunities.
Work itself has also changed. Nobody is just asking what you studied anymore. They want proof. If you are a developer, show your projects. If you are a digital marketer, show your campaigns. If you are a designer, show your work. Results speak louder than any degree ever could.
Remote work has taken this even further. Today, someone sitting in Cameroon can work for a company in the US or Europe without ever leaving home. In that situation, nobody cares where you went to school. They care if you can deliver. Skills have become the real currency, and once you understand that, everything starts to shift.
That being said, let’s not pretend degrees are useless. They still matter, especially in fields like medicine, law, and engineering. Even in tech, a degree can give you structure and foundation. But here is the key difference now. A degree by itself is no longer enough to carry you.
The people who are winning today are the ones who keep learning. They do not stop at one certificate or one qualification. They build, they experiment, they adapt, and they stay ready for what is next.
If you are young right now, the smartest move is not to pick one side. It is to combine both. Get the education if you can, but do not rely on it alone. Build real skills. Create projects. Stay curious. Stay updated.
Because the truth is simple. The world is no longer waiting to see what you studied. It is watching to see what you can actually do.
