Cameroonian recording artist Shura is saying “No To Rape”. This comes after online debates on women who wear provocative and indecent clothes can increase their chance of being raped and after Daphne Njie opened up about being raped as a child, which led to the “Say No To Rape” campaign. Although Daphne was raped as a child, it triggered discussions about rape in general.
Shura asks if people expect her to wear a Kaba to swim just to show that she is not indecent? A Kaba is a type of a very loosely fitted dress worn in Cameroon and other African countries, made of African print fabric, with lengths ranging anywhere from ankle length to a little bit below the knees. Kaba’s do not accentuates a woman’s body in any capacity as it is very loosely fitted from the chest area to the bottom of the dress. Many Kaba’s can be short sleeved, mid-arm length or long sleeves and if long sleeved, then the sleeves then to be loosely fitted.
Shura who shares the same record label as Daphne has been silent and has not said much about “No To Rape” until now.
