For anyone who grew up watching reruns of The Cosby Show, this one hits hard. Malcolm Jamal Warner, the actor who made Theo Huxtable one of the most beloved big brothers in sitcom history, has tragically died at the age of 54.
Warner passed away on July 20, 2025, while on vacation with his family in Costa Rica. According to authorities, he drowned after getting caught in a powerful current while swimming at Playa Cocles. Emergency responders confirmed his cause of death as asphyxia due to drowning.
The internet was instantly flooded with shock, grief, and tributes. Many are calling it the most devastating celebrity death since Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Like Boseman, Warner was admired not just for his talent, but for the quiet strength and authenticity he brought to his work.
Malcolm Jamal Warner became a household name in the 1980s as Theo Huxtable, the cool, funny, occasionally clueless teenage son on The Cosby Show. But he didn’t stop there. Over the years, he built a diverse and respected career, starring in shows like Malcolm & Eddie, The Resident, and Reed Between the Lines, as well as lending his voice to The Magic School Bus. In 2015, he even took home a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
To millennials and Gen Xers who grew up watching him, Warner wasn’t just a sitcom star — he felt like part of the family. His passing is a significant loss for television, Black culture, and a generation that saw him grow up on-screen.
Rest in peace, Malcolm. You’ll always be Theo to us.
