Cameroon Win Their First-ever Wafcon Title After Beating Malawi 3-0
The Indomitable Lionesses have finally done it. Cameroon are champions of Africa after beating Malawi 3-0 to win their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
Marie Ngah scored twice while Naomi Ndjoah Eto added another as Cameroon took control of the final and built a commanding lead before halftime. Malawi struggled to recover, and Cameroon stayed composed through the rest of the match to complete a historic victory.
The win ends a long wait for Cameroon, who had reached the WAFCON final several times before but had never lifted the trophy. This time, there would be no heartbreak. The Lionesses finally completed the job and gave the country a moment that will be remembered for years.
What makes the story even more remarkable is that Cameroon were not originally expected to be at the tournament. They had failed to qualify on the field but were later added after the competition was expanded from 12 teams to 16. Instead of simply being grateful for the opportunity, Cameroon made the most of it.
The Lionesses went on to produce a strong tournament, beating some of the continent’s biggest teams along the way and building momentum as the competition progressed. By the time they reached the final, they looked confident, organized and ready for the moment.
Ngah was one of the stars of the final, scoring twice and helping put the match beyond Malawi’s reach. Ndjoah Eto also played a major role by getting on the scoresheet and contributing to a dominant team performance.
The victory is also a major moment for coach Valentine Nguele, who guided Cameroon through a tournament they were not initially expected to play in and ended it by making history.
For Cameroonian soccer fans at home and across the diaspora, this is one of those victories that will be remembered for a long time. The Lionesses had come close before, but this generation finally brought the trophy home.
It could also give women’s soccer in Cameroon a much-needed boost. When young girls see women wearing the national colors and becoming African champions, the idea of playing soccer professionally suddenly feels a little less distant.
Now the challenge is making sure this victory becomes more than one great tournament. Better support for women’s soccer, stronger local competitions and more opportunities for young players will matter if Cameroon wants this championship to be the start of something bigger.
But for now, the Lionesses deserve their moment. They entered WAFCON through a second chance and left as African champions.
