African Proverbs That Still Hit Home Today
There are some things African parents and grandparents can explain in one sentence that would take the rest of us an entire paragraph. You may not have understood the proverb when you first heard it as a child, but adulthood has a funny way of making those old sayings suddenly make sense.
For Africans in the diaspora, these sayings can hit differently because many of us are building lives far from where we grew up while still carrying the values, humor and lessons we heard at home. We may be navigating corporate jobs, relationships, raising children abroad, sending money home or simply trying to figure out who we are between two cultures, but some of that old wisdom still fits very modern problems.
Until The Lion Learns To Write, Every Story Will Glorify The Hunter
This one feels especially relevant today. If you do not tell your own story, somebody else may tell it for you, and they may not get it right. Africans have spent years watching the continent explained through other people’s eyes, so there is something powerful about seeing more African writers, filmmakers, creators and everyday people telling their own stories. The lesson also works personally because you know your life better than the people making assumptions about it.
If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want To Go Far, Go Together
Independence is great until you realize nobody really builds a life completely alone. Someone recommended you for the job, watched your child, gave you advice, introduced you to a client or simply answered the phone when life was falling apart. For diaspora communities especially, networks matter. Sometimes community is the reason people manage to build new lives thousands of miles from home.
A Child Who Is Not Embraced By The Village Will Burn It Down To Feel Its Warmth
Whether you are raising children in Lagos, London, Dallas or Toronto, young people still need to feel seen. Parents are busy, everyone has a phone in their hand and families can live thousands of miles apart, but children still need attention, guidance and a sense that they belong somewhere. The proverb is a reminder that providing food and school fees is not the same as being emotionally present.
Wisdom Is Like A Baobab Tree. No One Person Can Embrace It
In other words, nobody knows everything, including the person with three degrees who likes reminding everybody about them. Experience matters too, and sometimes the person you least expect has already lived through the problem you are trying to solve. There is value in asking questions, listening to older people and also being willing to learn from younger generations who understand parts of today’s world that their parents may not.
Rain Does Not Fall On One Roof Alone
When life gets difficult, it can feel as though everybody else is doing perfectly while you are the only one struggling. Social media makes that feeling even worse because you see vacations, promotions, new houses and anniversary photos without seeing the bills, job stress, family problems or sleepless nights behind them. Everybody is carrying something, which is a good reason to give yourself and other people a little grace.
When Spider Webs Unite, They Can Tie Up A Lion
One person may not feel powerful, but a lot can happen when people organize around the same goal. We see this in families pooling resources, diaspora associations supporting communities back home, friends helping one another find jobs and small businesses growing because a community decided to support them. It is one of those proverbs that sounds simple until you realize how often collective effort changes people’s lives.
A Tree Cannot Make A Forest
Success can sometimes make us forget the people who helped along the way. Very few people reached where they are entirely by themselves, even if their Instagram caption says otherwise. Mentors, parents, siblings, friends, teachers and colleagues often contribute pieces of the journey, and appreciating those people does not make your accomplishments any less yours.
The Axe Forgets, But The Tree Remembers
This one becomes more understandable the older you get. The person who said something cruel may have forgotten it by lunchtime, while the person who heard it can remember those words for years. The same applies to how we treat employees, partners, children, friends and family members. What feels like a small moment to you may not feel small to the person on the receiving end.
One Finger Cannot Pick Up A Grain
There are times when asking for help is simply the sensible thing to do. That can be difficult for people who are used to being the dependable one in the family or the person everyone assumes has everything figured out. Strength does not always mean handling everything alone. Sometimes it means knowing when you need another pair of hands.
Patience Can Cook A Stone
We live in an era where somebody is always promising fast results. Make money in 30 days. Lose weight in two weeks. Build a following overnight. Become successful before 25. Real life usually takes longer. Careers take time, businesses take time, saving money takes time and even becoming comfortable in your own skin can take years. Patience does not mean sitting around doing nothing. It means continuing to work even when the results are taking longer than you hoped.
These proverbs survived because the problems behind them never really disappeared. Technology changed, people moved across continents and the way we live looks very different from our grandparents’ generation, but we are still dealing with family, ambition, pride, community, money, mistakes and the need to belong.
For many of us in the diaspora, keeping these sayings alive is also one small way of keeping a connection to home. You may hear them in English now instead of the language your grandmother originally used, but the lesson underneath is still there. Sometimes the older we get, the more we realize those elders were making a lot more sense than we gave them credit for.
