Paul Biya Wins Again As He’s Re-elected Into Office
Cameroon just wrapped up its presidential elections on October 12, 2025, and once again, Paul Biya has won this time with 53.66% of the vote. What shocked many? He didn’t just win in his usual strongholds he also took regions like the North and North West, where opposition support used to be strong.
Here’s how the other candidates did:
- Issa Tchiroma Bakary (FSNC): 35.19% – did surprisingly well in some northern cities but couldn’t beat Biya
- Cabral Libii (PCRN): 3.41% (popular with young voters, focused on youth and reform).
- Bello Bouba Maïgari (UNDP): 2.45% (kept some support in the North)
- Ndam Njoya (UDC): 1.66% (mainly in some parts of the West)
- Joshua Osih (SDF): 0.90% (lost influence in the North West and South West)
- Espoir Matomba (PURS): 0.85% Pierre Kwemo (UMS): 0.73%
- Akere Muna (UNIVERS): 0.40% Ateki Caxton (PAL): 0.36%
- Bouhga-Hagbe (MCNC): 0.27%
- Hiram Iyodi (FDC): 0.12%
The results show the RDPC’s continued dominance in Cameroon politics. Biya’s wins in unexpected regions might be linked to recent development projects, better security, and local alliances. In the North West, calmer voting and calls for peace may have also helped him, while in the North, Tchiroma’s expected advantage wasn’t enough against Biya’s deep networks.
Reactions are mixed as RDPC supporters celebrated in Yaoundé, Douala, and other major cities, calling it a win for stability and continuity. Some opposition supporters said the election wasn’t fair, and they were especially disappointed in areas where they had hoped to do better.
