Morocco Crowned AFCON 2025 Champions… But Not On The Pitch
AFCON 2025 just took a turn nobody saw coming.
Morocco have officially been crowned champions after Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the final result against Senegal, and the internet is already divided.
If you watched the game, you know Senegal actually won 1–0 after extra time. It looked done. Trophy secured. Celebrations ready. But in the final moments, things got messy. Morocco were awarded a late penalty that Senegal players strongly disagreed with, and in protest, they walked off before the match fully wrapped up.
What followed turned into chaos. Confusion on the pitch, tension in the stadium, and a lot of questions about what would happen next. At the time, Senegal were still declared winners, but Morocco didn’t let it go. They filed an appeal, arguing that the walk-off went against competition rules and affected how the match ended.
CAF stepped in, reviewed everything, and made a decision that completely flipped the story. Senegal were ruled to have forfeited the match, and the final result was officially recorded as 3–0 in favor of Morocco.
Just like that, Morocco became AFCON 2025 champions… without actually winning the final on the pitch.
And of course, people have a lot to say. Some feel rules are rules and discipline matters, especially at that level. Others are asking how a final of that magnitude can be decided like this instead of on the field.
What makes it even more interesting is that Morocco has a bit of history with unusual AFCON wins. Their first title back in 1976 wasn’t decided by a traditional final either. Now decades later, they’ve done it again in a way nobody expected.
For Morocco, it’s still a major win and a proud moment. For Senegal, it’s a tough one to swallow. And for African football, this is one of those moments people will be arguing about for a long time.
