Did you know that South Africa is the African country with the most Miss Universe titles?
After United States (9), Venezuela (7), Puerto Rico (5), The Philippines (4), Sweden (3), only South Africa is mentioned as the African country with the most Miss Universe wins.
South Africa has won the pageant three times, with their last win in 2019 when Zozibini Tunzi won it. Before her, their first Miss Universe win was in 1981, when Margaret Gardiner won it, and the second was won in 2017 by Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. As a matter of fact, South Africa is the only African country that has won the Miss Universe title. To South Africans, this could seal the debate that they have the prettiest women in the continent. Although this is not our point of view, based on the fact that they are the only African country to have won this title, many have assumed that.
South Africa might have won the Miss Universe title three times, but, does it truly represent the definition of African beauty? Many Africans have pointed out that although South Africa has won the title three times (in 1978, 2017 and 2019), Zozibini Tunzi who won in 2019 is the only black South African to have won the title while her predecessors were Caucasian, which brings another debate that Africa is predominantly black and a white South African is not a reflection of how most African women look like, however, two-thirds of the winners from South Africa were Caucasians.
Every country will claim to have the most beautiful women in Africa, and although only four African countries have won the Miss Universe title, no African country has won the title as many times as South Africa and the question is why?
