Cameroonian presidential candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary has run a relatively understated campaign thus far, yet he continues to attract massive crowds in nearly every region he visits.

As the October 12 election approaches, Tchiroma has emerged as one of the most talked-about candidates in recent weeks. Following campaign stops in Bamenda and Buea, he concluded the week in Douala, where the city was practically brought to a standstill by his arrival.
His entrance into Douala was not only triumphant but also marked by high energy among his supporters. In an emotionally charged display, many were seen tearing down campaign posters of incumbent President Paul Biya, echoing a clear and forceful message: “Biya must go!”

Despite the impressive turnouts, there is legitimate cause for concern. While thousands of motorbike riders and young people have shown up in support—a strong indicator of a desire for change—the critical question remains: how many of them will actually cast their votes on October 12? Without meaningful voter turnout, all the enthusiasm and momentum may ultimately amount to nothing.

There is no denying that Issa Tchiroma has captured the hearts of many Cameroonians. Should he go on to win the presidency on October 12, it would come as no surprise to a growing number of observers.
