Benfica Winger Suspended After Racism Allegations Before Real Madrid Clash
Gianluca Prestianni, a 19 year old Argentine winger who plays for Portuguese club Benfica, has been suspended ahead of his team’s Champions League playoff return leg against Spanish giants Real Madrid after allegations of racial abuse. The match takes place tonight at the Santiago Bernabeu and will decide which club advances in Europe’s top competition.
The controversy began during the first leg in Portugal when Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior reported to the referee that he had been racially abused. Kylian Mbappe later claimed he also heard Prestianni direct racist language toward Vinicius. The referee stopped the match for several minutes and activated UEFA’s anti racism protocol, although he did not personally hear the alleged words.
UEFA appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to review the case and handed Prestianni a provisional one match suspension while the investigation continues. The governing body made it clear that this temporary decision does not determine guilt and that further punishment could follow if the allegations are proven. A longer ban of up to ten matches is possible depending on the final ruling.
Benfica have strongly denied the accusations and defended their player. The club described the situation as a smear campaign and announced plans to appeal the suspension, though it is unlikely to be resolved before tonight’s match. Prestianni has also denied any wrongdoing. Real Madrid stated that they have submitted all available evidence to Uefa to support Vinicius.
The first leg ended in a one nil victory for Real Madrid, with Vinicius scoring the only goal. Benfica now face the difficult task of overturning that deficit away from home without one of their young attacking players.
Beyond the match itself, the incident once again raises serious concerns about racism in European football and how governing bodies respond when allegations surface. UEFA says a final decision will be made once all evidence has been reviewed. For now, both the sporting result and the investigation remain under close watch.
