Born October 1, 1966 , George Weah the current president of Liberia, took over his country as president in 2018 after serving as senator for a few years. Weah is one of the most successful African names in both soccer before resigning from soccer in 2003.
Weah had become a household name in African sports. He started his career as far back as 1985 in Liberia. In 1987 he signed for the Cameroonian Premiere League club Tonerre where he had the opportunity to win his first title with the club scoring 14 goals in 18 appearances.
From Cameroon, Weah shot for Monaco where he signed for Monaco in 1988 for a transfer fee of £12,000 after Wenger had flown to Africa prior to the signing to see him play. [Wikepedia] Now exposed to the bigger stage, Weah would go on to play for giant European sides like AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris St Germain, Marseille, Manchester City and Ended it at Al-Jazira.
He had an incredible career, becoming the first African player to win the Ballon d’Or award in 1995. In 1989, and 1995, he was named African Footballer of The Year. In 1996, he was awarded Best African Player of the Century. After retiring from soccer, he went on a political mission. He formed the Congress for Democratic Change where he ran for president in the 2005 election, losing to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the second round of voting.
Fast forward to the 2011 election, he ran unsuccessfully for vice-President alongside Winston Tubman. Weah was then elected to the Liberian Senate for Montserrado County in 2014. In 2017 Weah was elected as President of Liberia and assumed office in 2018.
As it stands, Weah is the 25th Liberian President and the only ex-African player to become a President of a country. What we can learn from this great man is that nothing is impossible. We can be anything we plan to be, but we must try over and over to get it.
