Throwback to when Cameroon made history by winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2002 without conceding a single goal. This unforgettable achievement by the Indomitable Lions remains one of the greatest defensive performances in the history of African football. The tournament was hosted in Mali and Cameroon’s team was packed with talented players. The likes of goalkeeper Boukar Alioum, defenders Rigobert Song and Raymond Kalla, midfielders Geremi Njitap and Lauren, and forwards Patrick Mboma and Samuel Eto’o coached by Winfried Schäfer were all key figures. Their teamwork, discipline and fighting spirit made this campaign a legendary one for Cameroonian football fans around the world.
In the group stage of the competition, Cameroon started very strong. They were placed in Group C along with DR Congo, Ivory Coast and Togo. In their first match, Cameroon defeated DR Congo by 1 to 0. They kept their focus for ninety minutes and once again kept a clean sheet. Cameroon won the match by 1 to 0 thanks to great teamwork and a well taken goal. The defenders and the goalkeeper continued their perfect form. After this victory, the team advanced to the semi final with great confidence.
The semi final was against the host nation Mali. The match was played in front of a loud home crowd, but Cameroon showed their experience and quality. They controlled the game with clever passing and strong defending. The Indomitable Lions scored three goals and kept another clean sheet. The match ended Cameroon 3 Mali 0. This victory secured their place in the final and fans were now dreaming of another AFCON title.
In the final, Cameroon faced Senegal. This was a very tough match as both teams were determined to win. It was a very tense game with strong defending on both sides. After ninety minutes, the score remained 0 to 0. Even after extra time, no goal was scored. The match had to be decided by penalties. In the penalty shootout, Cameroon showed great composure and won by 3 to 2 on penalties. The players celebrated as they lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy once again.
Throughout the entire tournament, Cameroon played six matches. They won five and drew one, which was the final that went to penalties. Most impressively, they did not concede a single goal in open play during all these matches. The final record was as follows:
