Olympique Lyonnais is a famous football team in France. The club was created in 1950 and became very popular in the 2000s. During that time, Lyon won seven league titles in a row from 2002 to 2008. Many great players came from their academy, including Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso. The team also played many times in European competitions like the Champions League and the Europa League. Fans all over the world respect Lyon for its exciting style of play and talented players.
But now, Lyon is facing big problems. It is not because of how they are playing on the field. In fact, the team is doing quite well in the league and is close to the top of the table. The problem is with their finances. The French football financial authority, called the DNCG, checks the money situation of football clubs in France. In November 2024, the DNCG found that Lyon had more than 500 million euros in debt. This is a very large amount of money that the club owes. Because of this, the DNCG made a strong decision. They said Lyon would be relegated to Ligue 2, which is the second division in France. They also banned Lyon from buying new players during the January transfer window.
This kind of relegation is very unusual because it is not based on performance in the league. Normally, teams get relegated if they finish at the bottom of the league table. But in this case, Lyon could finish in a very good position in Ligue 1 and still be sent down because of their financial troubles.
The club is not giving up. They are working very hard to fix the situation. First, they sold some important players during the January transfer window. This helped bring in money and reduce their wage bill. Players like Maxence Caqueret and Gift Orban were sold to help the club financially. Other top players with big salaries, like Alexandre Lacazette, are expected to leave at the end of the season when their contracts finish.
Also, the club’s owner, John Textor, and his group called Eagle Football, have added about 83 million euros to the club to help pay off some of the debt. They are also planning to raise more money by selling assets from other clubs that they own. All of this is part of the effort to convince the DNCG that the club’s finances can improve.
At the same time, Lyon has appealed the DNCG’s decision. In January 2025, they presented their case to the French Football Federation’s Appeals Committee. They showed the steps they are taking to fix their finances. For now, the relegation is provisional. It is not final yet. The club still has time to avoid being sent down.
The deadline for Lyon is the summer of 2025. By then, they need to meet the DNCG’s financial demands. It is believed that they must raise between 100 million and 175 million euros. If they manage to do this, they can stay in Ligue 1. If they fail, they will be relegated to Ligue 2, no matter where they finish in the league standings.
It is important to know that Lyon is also still allowed to play in the Europa League this season. UEFA reviewed the club’s accounts and confirmed they are eligible to take part in the competition. This gives the club some hope because good performances in Europe can also help bring in money.
In short, Olympique Lyonnais is facing one of the biggest challenges in its history. The club is fighting hard to fix its finances and avoid relegation. The players, the owner, and the fans all hope that the team can stay in Ligue 1 and return to a strong financial position. The final outcome will depend on what happens in the next few months. The football world is watching closely to see what happens to one of France’s most famous clubs.
