Uber has announced a new feature in the United States called Women Preferences. This new option is designed to make the experience safer and more comfortable for women using the ride sharing app. For a long time, Uber has faced questions about how it handles safety and sexual assault on its platform. Thousands of women riders and drivers have raised concerns about harassment and unwanted situations. With this new feature, Uber wants to give women more choice and control over who they ride with.
The Women Preferences feature allows female passengers to request female drivers when booking a ride. This can be done directly when requesting a car or by changing the settings in the app so that the preference is always active. Female drivers also get an option to choose to drive only women passengers if they want. This is very important because many women drivers have said that they sometimes feel uncomfortable or unsafe driving male riders, especially late at night. Now they have a way to limit their rides to other women, while still having the freedom to turn off the preference whenever they choose.
The pilot project will begin in three American cities which are Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit. Uber says the rollout will happen in the coming weeks. The company chose these cities because they have large numbers of riders and drivers and are good places to test new ideas. If the pilot works well, Uber may expand the feature to other parts of the United States.
This new idea is not completely new to Uber. The company first launched a similar feature in Saudi Arabia in 2019 when women were first legally allowed to drive. It later expanded the feature to around forty countries including France and Germany. Many female drivers in these countries said the feature helped them feel safer and gave them confidence to drive more hours. Now Uber has decided it is time to bring the same feature to America where demand has been very high from women riders and drivers.
One important detail is that the feature does not always guarantee a female driver. In most places, the number of male drivers is far higher than female drivers. Because of this, wait times might be longer when a woman requests a female driver. Uber has explained that it will do its best to match women riders and drivers but that availability will depend on how many female drivers are nearby at the time. Still, the fact that women now have the choice is seen as a big step forward.
Uber will use personal details like first names for riders and official identification for drivers to confirm gender. The app also allows people to update their gender information if it is incorrect. This is necessary to make sure the feature works properly and to avoid confusion during matches.
The move comes as Uber continues to face criticism for how it has dealt with cases of assault. In the past, reports revealed thousands of sexual assault incidents connected to Uber rides in the United States alone. The company has been under pressure from governments, women’s groups, and the public to make changes that improve safety. By allowing women to choose women, Uber hopes to rebuild trust and reduce some of the risks linked with using the service.
The Women Preferences feature is designed to empower both sides of the Uber community. Female riders can feel safer and more relaxed knowing they are being driven by another woman. Female drivers can choose to take only rides they are comfortable with, especially in situations where they may otherwise feel at risk. It is a solution that directly addresses concerns raised by women themselves rather than just offering general safety tips.
What makes this step significant is that Uber is not just reacting to problems, it is also learning from other markets. By testing the system in places like Saudi Arabia and Europe first, the company gathered feedback and saw that it worked. Now that same system is coming to the United States, a country where Uber is one of the main forms of transport in large cities.
This decision highlights how ride sharing companies are beginning to reshape themselves to answer social concerns. Safety, comfort, and choice are becoming as important as speed and price. Uber’s Women Preferences pilot shows how technology can be used to give people more control over their daily experiences. If successful, it could change the way women interact with transport apps across the world.
