Paraguayan Senator Publishes Open Letter To Kylian Mbappé As World Cup Controversy Continues
The fallout from Paraguay’s elimination at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is far from over. What started as an angry reaction after Paraguay’s 1-0 loss to France has now turned into one of the tournament’s biggest off-field controversies after Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla published an open letter to French captain Kylian Mbappé.
The controversy began shortly after the final whistle when Amarilla criticized Mbappé’s conduct during the match. She accused him of disrespecting Paraguayan players, celebrating arrogantly and refusing to shake goalkeeper Orlando Gil’s hand after the game. Had her criticism ended there, the discussion would likely have been about sportsmanship. Instead, the situation took a completely different turn when she made remarks about Mbappé’s race and African heritage, comments that were widely condemned as racist by fans, media outlets and public figures.
Mbappé quickly responded on X, calling Amarilla “a despicable woman unworthy of her office.” He said she did not represent the people of Paraguay and accused her of spreading racism that had overshadowed what should have been a proud World Cup campaign for the South American nation. He also made it clear that he would never stay silent when people use racism and hate to attack others.
Rather than ending the dispute, Amarilla has now published an open letter explaining her side of the story. She insists she has nothing against France and says she has long admired the country. According to the senator, she attended a French school in Paraguay, speaks French, enjoys visiting France and has spent holidays there with her family. She says her problem has always been with Mbappé’s behavior and not with France or the French people.
Amarilla also admits she deleted her original social media posts after realizing she had used offensive language. She says she wrote them while emotions were running high after Paraguay’s defeat and later realized she had repeated stereotypes she herself disagrees with. However, despite admitting she went too far, she stops short of offering Mbappé a direct apology.
Instead, much of the letter focuses on defending her original criticism. She argues that Mbappé showed arrogance throughout the match, insulted Paraguayan players and failed to show respect after the final whistle. She believes those actions were the real reason for her anger and says that is the issue people should be focusing on rather than the controversy that followed.
The senator also turns the spotlight back on Mbappé. She demands that he withdraw his comments describing her as “despicable” and “unworthy” and publicly apologize. Amarilla argues that, as a democratically elected senator, he had no right to attack her reputation and even suggests that his remarks amount to political and gender-based violence against a woman holding public office.
The exchange has divided opinion online. Some people believe Amarilla’s letter provides useful context by explaining why she was upset with Mbappé’s behavior during the match. Others argue that whatever point she was trying to make was lost the moment she brought race into the discussion. For many soccer fans, what could have been a debate about respect and sportsmanship instead became one of the biggest off-field controversies of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Whatever people think of Amarilla’s explanation, one thing is clear: this controversy has grown far beyond soccer. What began as frustration after Paraguay’s World Cup exit has turned into an international debate about sportsmanship, racism, public accountability and how quickly one social media post can overshadow an entire tournament. With Amarilla standing by her explanation and Mbappé showing no sign of backing down, this World Cup controversy doesn’t appear to be over anytime soon.
