In the past five years, the Middle East has become one of the biggest destinations for major sporting events. Countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have hosted some of the most important competitions in soccer, basketball, motorsports, boxing, tennis, and golf. These events brought world champions, international stars, and millions of fans to the region. This article looks at the biggest and most famous events held in the Middle East between 2020 and 2025.
The most important soccer event in recent years was the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar in 2022. This was the first time the World Cup was played in the Middle East. It brought global attention to the region, with all eyes focused on cities like Doha, Lusail, and Al Wakrah. Fans from every continent traveled to Qatar to support their teams. The final match between Argentina and France became one of the most talked-about games in soccer history.
Apart from the World Cup, Saudi Arabia has hosted several major soccer events. The Spanish Super Cup has been played in Riyadh and Jeddah. This tournament featured top clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid. The Italian Super Cup has also been held in Saudi Arabia, with big clubs like AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus playing there. These matches are not only exciting but also help grow the popularity of soccer in the region.
Saudi Arabia has also become the center of attention because of its domestic league. The Saudi Pro League has attracted famous players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Neymar Junior. These stars have helped turn local matches into global attractions.
Basketball
Basketball is growing fast in the Middle East. One of the biggest steps was the arrival of the NBA in the United Arab Emirates. The NBA Abu Dhabi Games started in 2022 and have continued each year. Teams from the United States play preseason games in front of packed crowds in the UAE. These games have helped increase interest in basketball among young fans and have built a connection between American basketball and the Arab world.
Motorsports
Motorsport is one of the most consistent sports in the Middle East. Formula One races are now held every year in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The Bahrain Grand Prix has been part of the Formula One calendar since 2004 and continues to be one of the best night races. Saudi Arabia joined in 2021 with the Jeddah Grand Prix, a thrilling street race that quickly became a fan favorite. Qatar brought back its Grand Prix in 2023 at the Lusail International Circuit. Abu Dhabi hosts the season finale each year at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dakar Rally has been held in Saudi Arabia since 2020. This is one of the toughest off-road races in the world. Drivers cross deserts, mountains, and rocky landscapes for more than a week. In 2025, Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi won the race, bringing pride to the Kingdom.
The region has also hosted exciting endurance races like the Six Hours of Abu Dhabi and new events such as the Dubai T100 Triathlon, which mixes running, cycling, and swimming in one competition.
Boxing and Combat Sports
The Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia, has quickly become a favorite destination for big boxing matches. In 2023, the Kingdom hosted the famous fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou. Although Fury won the match, Ngannou impressed everyone by standing toe to toe with the heavyweight champion.
In 2024, another massive event took place when Artur Beterbiev faced Dmitry Bivol in a light heavyweight title fight in Riyadh. It was a rare clash where all the major championship belts were on the line.
Saudi Arabia also started hosting mixed martial arts events. UFC will make its debut in Qatar in 2025 with a Fight Night in Doha. This event is expected to bring some of the best fighters in the world to the region and boost the popularity of MMA among Arab fans.
Tennis
Tennis has taken a big leap in the Middle East. One of the most important changes happened in 2024 when the WTA Finals were moved to Riyadh. This tournament is one of the most prestigious in women’s tennis. It features the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams of the year. Saudi Arabia signed a three-year deal to host this tournament, starting in 2024.
Another headline event was the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh. This exhibition tournament featured some of the biggest names in men’s tennis, including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev. The prize money was the highest ever offered for a tennis exhibition, showing how serious the region is about investing in the sport.
Every year, Dubai hosts the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. This ATP 500 tournament attracts top men’s players, while the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open welcomes stars from the women’s tour. Doha also hosts the Qatar Open and the Qatar Total Open, both important stops on the tennis calendar.
Golf
Golf has become very popular in the Gulf countries. One of the most famous tournaments is the Dubai Desert Classic. Held every January, it is part of the European Tour and has featured champions like Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.
Abu Dhabi also hosts the HSBC Golf Championship, another big event on the international golf schedule. These tournaments are part of the Rolex Series, which includes the most important events outside of the majors.
Dubai also hosts the DP World Tour Championship, the final event of the European Tour season. This tournament brings together the best players of the year and offers huge prize money.
In 2025, Bahrain hosted the Bahrain Championship at the Royal Golf Club. This marked a big step in the Kingdom’s effort to attract international golf events and develop the sport at home.
The Middle East has turned into a global sports hub in just a few years. From hosting the FIFA World Cup to bringing the WTA Finals to Riyadh, the region has shown that it can organize some of the world’s biggest competitions. Stars from every major sport are now playing or competing in the Gulf. With more events planned for the future, the Middle East will remain at the heart of world sports for years to come.
